Meaning of name The name Askia refers to Askia Muhamed, the ruler of the Songhay empire in the fifteenth century that became the largest empire in medieval West Africa. The package design also shows an eagle and a football. The eagle is the heraldic animal of the Malian football club, and the brand first appeared around the time when Mali hosted the Africa Cup in 2002. Askia is among the first tea packages on the Malian market. It has been available as Gunpowder (red package), Special Gunpowder (blue package), Chunmee (green package) and Special Chunmee (rose package), Gunpowder Saddam (yellow-green package), which refers to a tea that is very strong named after the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
